How Dental Insurance Works

It is important to understand that every dental policy is unique. You will have to check the specific details of your plan to learn how it works. In the meantime, we can give you a general overview of the coverage provided by many PPO plans:

  • Preventive care: 100% covered
  • Minor restorative services: 80% covered
  • Major restorative services: 50% covered

Keep in mind as well that your plan may have a deductible, an annual maximum, and a waiting period before you are eligible for certain services.

What Is the Difference Between Dental & Medical Insurance?

Dental insurance has a heavy focus on prevention. It covers checkups, cleanings, and other basic services that medical insurance does not help out with. It is also exclusive to your oral health, focusing on addressing issues like cavities, gum disease, and other issues that affect the tissues in the mouth.

Medical insurance is geared toward whole-body wellness. In some cases, there is a bit of overlap between it and dental insurance. For example, in some cases, a health insurance policy might cover oral surgery or treatment for traumatic injuries to the mouth.

In-Network vs. Out-of-Network

Whether our practice is in-network with your insurance policy or not, you may be able to use your plan here in a way that minimizes your out-of-pocket spending.

In-Network Coverage

If a practice is in-network with your plan, it simply means that they have a contract that controls prices, helping both patients and the insurance company to save money. Coverage rates are often higher at in-network practices.

Out of Network

It is common for dental insurance plans to allow patients to visit any dentist, including those outside of their coverage network. If that is true of your policy, we invite you to see how we can help you use your benefits. You can enjoy many of the same advantages that you would at an in-network dentist — all while receiving care from the dentist that you prefer!
