Gum disease is linked to preterm delivery and low birth weights, as well as many other conditions. Here’s how to keep your gums healthy until your little bundle of joy arrives.
Understanding Pregnancy Gingivitis
Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease, which is caused by bacteria in plaque and tartar buildup from poor oral hygiene. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 50% of adults over the age of 30 have a form of gum disease. It can affect anyone, but various factors can increase your risk, like pregnancy.
Hormone changes increase blood flow to your gums, which can make them sensitive, swollen, or tender. Hormonal changes caused by pregnancy also affect your body’s response to bacteria, increasing your risk of periodontal infections.
You can experience more plaque buildup, especially during the second trimester. Snacking more often or eating unhealthy foods contributes to harmful oral bacteria that can affect your teeth and gums.
Keep Your Gums Healthy
Pregnancy doesn’t have to affect your dental health. You can lessen your risk of poor gum health by committing to good dental hygiene. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste to brush after every meal. Clean all surfaces of your teeth for at least two minutes.
Floss your teeth at least once daily to remove food residue and plaque your toothbrush couldn’t reach. If your gums are sensitive, use a waterflosser. It uses gentle water pressure to clean hard-to-reach areas.
Finish your oral hygiene routine with a salt water rinse. It’s a safe solution to kill harmful bacteria. It can also help with gum pain and inflammation. Rinse your mouth with water after bouts of morning sickness to remove stomach acid. Avoid brushing your teeth for at least 30 minutes because your enamel will be temporarily weakened.
Besides keeping your mouth clean at home, visit your dentist every 6 months for a cleaning and checkup. Contrary to what you might have heard, preventive dentistry is safe and recommended for expecting mothers. Your dentist will monitor your dental health to detect anything concerning while it is still small, like gum inflammation. Be sure to let your dental team know you’re pregnant. They’ll ensure your safety and that of your developing child when performing any dental services.
