5 New Year’s Resolutions for a Healthy Smile

Champagne for New Year’s EveYou don’t want to spend your free time in 2022 sitting in the dental chair having cavities filled. However, many patients don’t take all the necessary steps that they need in order to keep their smile in excellent health. The good news is that there is no better time than the start of January to take new steps to work towards the best version of yourself. This year, keep your smile in mind! Here are some New Year’s resolution ideas to promote a healthy smile.

Attend Regular Checkups

It is recommended that you see your dentist twice a year for regular cleanings and checkups. However, approximately a third of Americans don’t see their dentist as often as they should. Whether it’s due to your busy schedule or you just haven’t gotten around to it, now is a great time to get back on track. Give your dentist a call to schedule an appointment. Before you leave the practice, don’t forget to book your next visit.

Additional Flossing

As much as you want to, you can’t hide your lack of flossing from your dentist or hygienist. Even if you are brushing on a regular basis, there are still some areas of the mouth that the bristles of your toothbrush can’t quite reach. Flossing is necessary in order to remove food particles, plaque, and bacteria from between the teeth and beneath the gumline. This way, you can prevent the development of periodontal disease in the future. Keep a container of floss by your toothbrush and toothpaste so you don’t forget.

Go Easy on Sugar

Sweets are okay to enjoy in moderation, but you shouldn’t be enjoying them too frequently throughout the day. Your teeth will eventually pay the price. Try not to buy as many sugary treats. Instead, stock up on other foods that can help to fulfill your cravings. Instead of cola, try sparkling water. If you like candy, have sugar-free gum as an alternative.

Eat Tooth-Friendly Foods

There are plenty of delicious, beneficial foods for your smile. Try to include dairy products in your diet, as they are full of calcium and great for keeping your bones and teeth strong. This includes milk, yogurt, and cheese. Other great tooth-friendly options include apples, pears, cranberries, almonds, carrots, and celery.

Don’t Smoke

Using tobacco products doubles your risk for gum disease and is linked to oral cancer. This habit can be very difficult to give up, so finding a healthier replacement activity is key. Talk to your doctor, friends, and family about the best ways for you to quit for good.

Don’t leave your smile behind this year. By using some of the resolutions listed above, you can work towards obtaining excellent oral health in 2022!
